5 WAYS TO ENHANCE YOUR BODY’S DETOXIFICATION THIS SPRING THROUGH FOOD

Your body is set up to naturally detox through the liver, lungs, kidneys, digestive system and skin.

Adding these 5 types of food into your diet will help modulate metabolic pathways to remove toxins from the body.

  1. Promote Prebiotics

Gut health is very important to keep your detoxification system healthy to maintain proper elimination of toxins. Prebiotics are foods that are high in insoluble fibre and feed probiotics to optimize digestion. They are found in legumes, vegetables and fruits like peas, oats, apples, dandelion greens, asparagus and leeks.

  2. Count your cruciferous.

Cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, brussels sprouts, radishes and cabbage.  They are high in glucosinolates and Indole-3-carbinol that help to remove carcinogens and other toxins from the liver.  Cruciferous vegetables also activate enzymes in the liver and boost the immune system.

  3. Optimize your omega 3

Essential fatty acids such as fish oils, hemp seed oil, and flaxseed oils are required in all functions of the liver, cellular membranes and nerve and brain tissue repair.   They offer support for the liver as well as  reduce inflammation and neutralize free radicals in the body.

  4. Amplify antioxidants.

Antioxidants work together to prevent or slow down free radicals in the body that might damage our cells and cause us harm.   Foods that are bright in colour have the highest antioxidants such as blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, beetroot, carrots, lemons, avocados, collard greens, garlic and squash.

  5. Incorporate inflammatory reducing foods.

Inflammation is an immune response to fight pathogens, toxic compounds and damaged cells, which is a good thing!  But we can end up with chronic inflammation due to the westernized diet which causes oxidative stress and chronic illness.  If we eat foods that help to reduce inflammation we are lowering the unnecessary inflammatory response allowing our immune system to function properly. Anti- inflammatory foods are turmeric, avocados, kale and green tea plus all foods already listed in this list.

In addition to increasing certain foods, reducing refined sugar, processed foods, alcohol and coffee are just as important.
